Linux Services

Linux is one of our core competencies at TwoCell™. We have a proven track record of utilizing Linux in key areas to benefit our customer's bottom line. We have implemented Linux in a variety of roles, including:

  • File and Print Server for Microsoft Windows networks.
  • Authentication Server for Microsoft Windows networks.
  • DHCP and WINS servers.
  • Secure DNS servers.
  • Stateful Firewall.
  • Web and Mail Proxy server.
  • Network Intrusion Detection, NIDS.
  • Backup Server.
  • VPN Server w/ strong key-based authentication.

And let's not forget the basics; the web services Trifecta, as it were:

  • Apache Web Server, the software that hosts 53.76% of all internet sites. (Netcraft, July 07)
  • MySQL, the popular and powerful SQL Database, with over 10 million installations. (MSQL AB)
  • PHP, the programming language designed for server-side scripting.

Otherwise known as LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP), these are the basic building blocks for many powerful tools for the small to medium sized business. TwoCell™ will host and support these LAMP applications:

  • MediaWiki - great for intranets! We use this internally for our knowledgebase.
  • Wordpress - this blog software can make a good lightweight Content Management System (CMS).
  • ZenCart - shopping cart. From bricks to clicks, right?
  • phpbb - powerful internet forum software.
  • Joomla - a popular CMS.
  • activeCollab - project management software, we use it to work with clients!
  • Webcalendar - web-based multi-user calendar.

Even more impressive is that all the applications listed above can be installed on one server! It's a veritalbe network "swiss-army" knife.

why you care about linux:

Well as a business owner, you don't! However, you do care about the bottom line. All of the solutions above are free of software licensing costs. Licensing costs add up. Let's say you want a typical system to provide your company a file server, an intranet and email. Here are your server licensing costs (as of July 07):

  • Small Business Server For Windows Premium 2003 32-Bit Windows w/ 5 Client License: $1,682.89
  • Total: $1,682.89

That's enough to get you up and running with a total of five users. However that is not all it takes to run a server. At the bare minimum you need to implement a backup solution and server anti-virus:

  • Small Business Server For Windows Premium 2003 32-Bit Windows w/ 5 Client License: $1,682.89
  • Acronis True Image 9.1 Server for Windows: $699
  • Kaspersky Security for Mail Server w/ 10 Workstations: $320 per year
  • Total: $2701.89, $320 yearly recurring cost.

Business is booming. It's time to scale! Lets say you add a new user:

  • Small Business Server For Windows Premium 2003 32-Bit Windows w/ 5 Client License: $1,682.89
  • Small Business Server For Windows User Client Access License 2003 5 Client License: $457.87
  • Acronis True Image 9.1 Server for Windows: $699
  • Kaspersky Security for Mail Server w/ 10 Workstations: $320 per year
  • Total: $3159.76, $320 yearly recurring cost.

Yikes, you need a client access license for every workstation that connects to your server. But you can't buy just one. You need to buy 5 at a time. So the above will get you to ten users/employees. Now let's jump ahead:

  • 25 user total: $4828.37, $615 yearly recurring cost.
  • 50 user total: $7117.72, $1224 yearly recurring cost.

Now compare that with a Linux solution. The figures above might not break the bank, but it's still pretty hard to compete with $0! That's right, the Linux alternative has no license fees whatsoever. And in our experience, a Linux deployment doesn't cost more to maintain either. In fact, backup and anti-virus are free. Intrusion detection and hardware monitoring, are also free of charge.

not for everyone

TwoCell™ is a Microsoft Partner, and Microsoft is our bread and butter. Not every Linux solution is a fit for every customer. Some of our clients wouldn't even recognize the word "Linux", but then again they don't know the word "client access license" either. Why? Because TwoCell™ implemented a license free solution for them and they don't care what it is as long as it helps them move towards there business goals!

our allegiance lies with you

Our loyalty lies with you, not the vendor. We will implement the solution that is in your best interest. We keep our prices as transparent as possible; if you want to know what our margins are, please ask! TwoCell™ won't push you toward a solution most profitable for us. Open pricing keeps us honest, lean and competive.
